Winning the Irish Open for the fourth time – the biggest World Cup in kickboxing – has been one of my best achievements in the sport yet. A week on and I’m still buzzing! Last weekend was the seventh time I reached the final of this tournament (sixth in a row) and I had almost forgotten about my first final until I took a trip home to Sligo over the past few days and came across my first Irish Open final trophy from 2003….feeling ancient right now! I was only really a kid back then and had no idea reaching the final of the senior ladies category was even a big deal. Now I’m bloody delighted with that and to know that I’m still winning this competition 14 years later is pretty cool!
As always the number of fighters entered was massive and I had eight fights over the weekend from fighters from the UK, Italy, Mexico and more. I was chuffed to come through on the winning side against some of the best women in the world; even though I was fairly battered and bruised and left the weekend with an injured knee. Nothing a bit of rest and physio won’t fix so it was totally worth it!
You may have all spotted some media clips during the week about the competition and my win here and really they sum up how I feel about the whole competition so I’ll leave you with clips and images from the week. Couldn’t have done this without the support of my coaches and club at Tallaght Martial Arts and now I’m looking forward to getting back to training and focusing on some new competition goals over the next few months!
