Today I’m just home from the WAKO World Cup in Rimini, Italy. Also known as the Bestfighter World Cup, there were over 40 nations taking part in the event this year. As normal I entered both -55kg and -60kg categories as well as the Women’s Grand Champion to try get as many fights as possible and also to try win as much as possible.
First up for me was the women’s -55kg category where I made it to the final against a really tough fighter from Italy. This was my third World Cup of the year and my third consecutive final to reach. I started off the bout poorly and finished the first round seven points down. Thanks to my sister in my corner coaching me, I was able to adjust my tactics and fought back to bring the scores level with a few seconds left on the clock. I decided to just go for the win rather than waiting for extra time and it paid off. I won the fight by a single point and with that won the Bestfighter World Cup…chuffed!!
In the heavier weight division I reached the semi-finals beating a really tough opponent from Norway in the quarter finals and was up against the current World Champion from Belgium in the semis. Having beaten her before I knew I could reach the final but it was always going to be a big challenge. I took a massive hit to my nose which would not stop bleeding and it unfortunately affected my performance thereafter. It was a very close fight but I came out the wrong end of it and settled for a bronze medal. I also finished with a bronze in the Women’s Grand Champion so overall I was pretty happy with my weekend of fighting.
I’ll be resting my face for a few days now and will hopefully be ready to take part in another international event this weekend in Mayo. I’ll be attending this along with other members from Tallaght Martial Arts and our coach Dave Heffernan so hopefully it’ll be a successful outing for the whole club!
