On Saturday I won a Bronze Medal at the Irish Open International Karate Tournament. Taking part in my first major International Karate Competition I was delighted to be part of this event and coming out with a medal as well. The Irish Open International took place at the National Indoor Arena in Blanchardstown and had over 600 competitors from countries such as Canada, Belgium, Switzerland, Portugal, France, GB and more travel to Dublin to compete against Irelands best.
After receiving a bye in the first round of the tournament I then came up against Lisa Bracke from Belgium. I got a head kick on my opponent after the first minute and came out with a 3-0 win to get a great start. I had three really tough fights throughout the day but unfortunately didn’t make it through to the final after finishing with a draw against the eventual winner from Luxembourg. We finished with the score tied but in Karate when a bout is tied at the end, the decision goes to the five judges to select a winner and unfortunately the judges opted to award the win to the Luxembourg fighter.
It was a brilliant experience all the same and I’m really starting to see all the training and coaching paying off. I’ve so much learnt from this competition and can’t wait for the next one. That takes me to the Karate Series A competition in Salzburg, Austria in two weeks and will be a massive step up with almost 100 competitors registered in my weight category alone….fingers crossed!!
